THE VICTIMS RETURN

THE VICTIMS RETURN: SURVIVORS OF THE GULAG AFTER STALIN

978193002408

This book tells one of the most important but little-known stories of the twentieth century.

Joseph Stalin’s reign of mass terror in the Soviet Union has been called “the other Holocaust.” During its nearly twenty-five-year history, more innocent men, women, and children perished than in Hitler’s destruction of the European Jews. Many millions died in Stalin’s Gulag of torture prisons and forced-labor camps, but millions of others somehow survived to be freed after his death, in 1953.

THE VICTIMS RETURN is the story of those survivors. Kept secret for decades by Soviet repression and censorship, their saga is now told by Stephen F. Cohen, who came to know many former inmates of the Gulag during his thirty years of visiting Moscow. Based on his personal interviews with those survivors and on materials recently made available, Cohen has written a powerful narrative of their post-Gulag fates, from their liberation and return to Soviet society to their long struggle to salvage what remained of their shattered lives and to obtain justice.

Readers will be moved by the individual stories Cohen tells and enthralled by his account of the fierce conflicts that raged, both in the country and at the highest political levels, over the victims of the terror and those who had victimized them. Indeed, as Cohen shows, the struggle between anti-Stalinists and Stalinists is still under way in Russia even today.

Author Stephen F. Cohen has been called our “most original, creative, informed, and insightful” writer on Russia. He is a leading scholar of Soviet and post-Soviet Russia and a frequent contributor to American television and radio.
