The new little imprint of Peapod Press, under the PublishingWorks, Inc., auspices, has big plans for the year ahead. As the staff forms under the direction of PublishingWorks President, Jeremy Townsend, a list has already begun of titles for the coming year.

Peapod Press is a bold new voice in small pressdom. They are unabashedly an author-subsidized press, but “with a twist.”

“Peapod will specialize in children’s books, memoirs, regional titles—anything that could do reasonably well in small print runs, but might not be suitable for larger printings,” says Townsend. “We are inundated with submissions for PublishingWorks, but can only afford to invest in so many titles a year, and those must have a market and audience that will enable us to do printings of 5000 or more.” Townsend continues, “Peapod is a way for authors to at least get a foot in the door.”

Under Peapod’s model, authors receive professional editing, design and printing of their titles, and are responsible for all expenses, but also remain in charge of the project. The “twist” is that the books are then made available to regional booksellers, online venues, through PublishingWorks’s website, etc., with nearly all proceeds (minus a small commission) going directly to the author. In fact, Peapod will train its authors to be their own sales reps, making sure they get the most exposure possible.

And if a Peapod title does exceptionally well?
